WOONSOCKET, R.I. (AP) - A 45-year-old man who police say confessed to killing his 57-year-old lover inside her Woonsocket apartment has pleaded not guilty.

Brian Audette, who is serving a 7-year prison sentence for violating probation after a robbery conviction, entered the not guilty plea Wednesday to a murder charge.

Prosecutors say Audette told police he beat Donna Pike on July 7, 2013, after drinking half a pint of vodka, and left her to die.

Her body was discovered several days later.

Prosecutors are seeking to try Audette as a habitual offender, which could add 25 years to any sentence. The Woonsocket Call reports he had been released from a West Virginia prison just three months before Pike was killed.
