PHOENIX (AP) - The Arizona Citizens Clean Elections Commission is fighting an effort by Attorney General Tom Horne to block its investigation into his re-election campaign.

The commission voted Thursday to direct its attorney to defend against the suit Horne filed last week seeking to stop the election law complaint investigation. In the meantime, the investigation is ongoing. A judge hears arguments next month.

The investigation was launched on June 19 after the commission decided there was reasonable cause to dig deeper into the allegations.

Former Horne staffer Sarah Beattie alleges that Horne was using his executive staff to run his re-election campaign on state time. Horne denies wrongdoing.

A separate investigation requested by the Arizona Secretary of State’s Office last week has been assigned to a retired judge and Gilbert’s town attorney.
