GARY, Ind. (AP) - A simple white cross with the name and badge number of a slain Gary police officer now marks the spot where he was fatally shot.

A group of police officers gathered Wednesday with members of Patrolman Jeffrey Westerfield’s family for a ceremony placing the cross.

Joe Hamer of the Indiana Fraternal Order of Police led a prayer urging everyone to keep the family in their thoughts, as well as those investigating the July 6 shooting and for the safety of all officers. Westerfield’s tearful daughters placed flowers near the cross.

Lake County Sheriff John Buncich says detectives are still building the case against a man jail on an unrelated warrant who they believe shot Westerfield. Buncich says detectives are looking into tips coming from the $10,000 reward that’s been offered.
