BANGOR, Maine (AP) - State of Maine flags are being lowered to half-staff in Bangor after the death of the city’s former police chief.

Gov. Paul LePage ordered that the flags be lowered on Thursday, when Don Winslow’s funeral is being held.

Winslow died last week at his home after a battle with cancer. The 27th police chief of Bangor was 57 years old.

LePage says that Winslow’s career in public safety showed his love for his community and “his dedication serving it.”

After joining the Bangor Police Department in 1979 and serving in several positions, Winslow retired in 2007 and was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease and later, cancer.

The Republican governor’s office says that Winslow also became Bangor’s first community relations officer and taught children and the community about the role of police.
