ORANGE PARK, Fla. (AP) - In a story July 17 about two Florida girls being investigated for torturing and killing a tortoise, The Associated Press reported erroneously the name of the animal rights group that posted and reported their videos. The name of the group is the Nevada Voters for Animals, not Nevada Voters of Animals.

A corrected version of the story is below:

Florida wildlife officials investigate 2 girls after video posted of them torturing a tortoise

ORANGE PARK, Fla. (AP) - State wildlife officials are investigating two north Florida girls after a video posted online showed them lighting a threatened gopher tortoise on fire and stomping it to death.

Videos posted on the Facebook page of the Nevada Voters for Animals showed the Orange Park girls dousing the tortoise with a flammable fluid and laughing as the creature tries to get away from the flames.

A second video shows one of the girls stomping on the animal until its shell breaks and it is dead.

Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission spokeswoman Karen Parker told the Florida Times-Union (https://bit.ly/1jQ6SgR) that the agency has received a lot of complaints about the video.

The agency is working with the State Attorney’s Office on possible charges.
