METAIRIE, La. (AP) - Jefferson Parish sheriff’s deputies say the body of a 24-year-old man has been recovered from a drainage canal in Metairie.

Col. John N. Fortunato says the body was found shortly before 8 a.m. Friday.

Fortunato says there were no signs of trauma.

He says an autopsy will be performed by the Jefferson Parish Corner’s Office to determine the cause of death.

Fortunato says a witness told investigators he met the victim Thursday afternoon while sitting along the canal bank. After drinking alcohol for quite some, the witness said he left around 8:30 p.m.

While leaving, Fortunato says the witness observed the victim jump into the water to go swimming. He said the witness returned to the area Friday morning to find a body floating in the canal.
