NORTH BELLPORT, N.Y. (AP) - A family dog was shot to death when several men attempted to burglarize a home on Long Island.

It happened just after 3 p.m. Thursday on Montauk Highway near Doane Avenue in North Bellport.

Police say four to five men attempted to enter a home, but four adult residents pushed the door back as the suspects sprayed them with an unknown chemical.

During the struggle, police say the dog raced outside and was fatally shot with a small caliber handgun by one of the suspects before they all fled. The 11-year-old, three-legged pit bull named Sarah died from her wound.

Nothing was taken and all of the suspects had their faces partially covered.

There have been no arrests.
