FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (AP) - A Navajo Nation lawmaker has been charged with theft and criminal damage after a television was stolen from a motel in Gray Mountain.

Duane Tsinigine, 49, has pleaded not guilty to the charges. He appeared in Flagstaff Justice Court on Friday for a pre-trial conference.

A Coconino County sheriff’s deputy responded to a report of theft July 6 at the Anasazi Inn.

Tsinigine told authorities that he noticed a flat-screen TV in the trunk of his car after he checked out of the motel.

He said he told friends that he was staying with to return it, but did not call police.

An employee at the nearby gas station told authorities she spotted the television when the car’s trunk was open.

Two men with Tsinigine ran off before police arrived.

Tsinigine told The Associated Press that he was not involved in the theft.
