MIAMI (AP) - Commissioners in Miami-Dade County have endorsed giving waterfront county land to a Cuban exile museum.

The decision instructs Mayor Carlos Gimenez to begin negotiations with organizers pursuing the non-profit museum.

County officials voted in favor of the plan at a meeting Thursday.

The land known as Parcel B sits to the east of the county-owned AmericanAirlines Arena. How the site should be used has been the subject of debate for several years.

The Miami Herald (https://hrld.us/1l9LGgl) reports that the discussion leading up to the decision highlighted the community’s ethnic sensitivities. African-American commissioners noted that when officials considered turning the land over to a Nigerian museum last year the plan had received more scrutiny. However, the vote did not fall along ethnic lines.
