RIO GRANDE CITY, Texas (AP) - Police have arrested a South Texas man accused of stabbing his 11-year-old daughter 21 times.

The Starr County Sheriff’s Department has charged a 37-year-old man in Rio Grande City with attempted capital murder in connection to the Tuesday attack.

Police say the man repeatedly stabbed his daughter in the arms and legs before puncturing himself twice in the neck. Police say the girl’s grandparents were asleep in another room during the assault.

Both the man and his daughter are being treated at an area hospital. Their conditions are unknown.

Police say he will be booked into the Starr County Jail upon his release from the hospital.

A judge on Thursday set the man’s bond at $1 million.
