PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Nicholas Mattiello is backing the primary opponent of one of the Democrats who didn’t support him for House speaker.

Rep. Maria Cimini of Providence abstained in the March vote to succeed Gordon Fox. Mattiello says in a statement Cimini “never came to me to indicate she would support me in the future.” He says her primary opponent, attorney Daniel McKiernan, sought his support.

Mattiello, who is fairly conservative, calls McKiernan a moderate with views that are “more in line with the voters of his district and the state of Rhode Island.”

Cimini is among the more liberal members of the Democratic caucus. A message was left with her Friday.

Several of the 12 representatives who either opposed Mattiello or abstained reached out to him afterward.
