GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) - All students at 24 Alachua schools will receive free breakfast and lunch regardless of their family income or ability to pay - thanks to a federal program.

The Alachua County Public Schools’ Food and Nutrition Services will oversee the program, which is being funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

The Gainesville Sun (https://bit.ly/1oQkowJ ) reports the schools were selected based on the percentage of students who used programs such as Head Start and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, and who already qualify for free and reduced lunch.

School officials say about 8,500 students will be able to get free breakfast and lunch, on top of the thousands who already get free breakfast.

The families at the 24 schools won’t have to apply. Students can simply go through the line.
