AMES, Iowa (AP) - Some in the central Iowa city of Ames say coyote sightings in a residential neighborhood have them worried about the safety of their children and pets.

Des Moines television station KCCI reports (https://bit.ly/1qR2AnR ) that an animal control officer has put out traps to try to catch what he calls an “urban coyote.”

Teresa Marks, who lives in the neighborhood in west Ames, says a coyote that she and others have spotted several times recently trotted toward her children and their friends while they were on a backyard swing set. Marks says the children “came in screaming.”

Ron Edwards, an Ames animal control officer, says his office has received about two dozen calls from the neighborhood about the coyote.

He says he takes his office takes the reports seriously.
