PHOENIX (AP) - Phoenix police have arrested a man accused of fatally hitting a pedestrian and then fleeing the scene.

Police spokesman Steve Martos says 66-year-old Vernon Traylor has been booked into a Maricopa County jail on charges of DUI and leaving the scene of a fatal traffic collision.

Martos says Traylor was heading southbound on a Phoenix street around 9 p.m. Friday when his Ford Mustang struck 53-year-old Ruben Jimenez Solis.

Authorities say Solis died a short time later at a hospital.

Traylor is accused of initially stopping but then speeding away in his vehicle after officers arrived.

Police say Traylor was found to be impaired by alcohol.
