TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) - Tempe police have identified a man who was shot after allegedly shooting at officers at a motel.

Police spokesman Scott Smith says 25-year-old Jonathan L. Williams was in extremely critical condition Saturday and was not expected to survive.

According to Smith, police were called to a disturbance at the Motel 6 on Scottsdale Road at 6:30 p.m. Friday.

Williams allegedly assaulted his 24-year-old girlfriend at the same motel a day earlier and had returned.

Authorities say Williams fled from police in the lobby and pointed a handgun at them.

They say Williams fired his weapon and was then hit by an officer returning fire.

There were no other injuries. Police say nobody else was in the lobby at the time.

The officer who shot Williams is on paid administrative leave.
