SUMTER, S.C. (AP) - Politics and prose are on the agenda as South Carolina’s Democrats celebrate the opening of Sumter County’s new party headquarters.

Sumter County Democratic Party chairman Allen Bailey says the public is invited to Saturday’s event beginning at 12:30 p.m. Saturday.

Bailey tells The Sumter Item (https://bit.ly/1tZF3GR ) that visitors can grab finger foods and beverages while they chat with Democratic candidates.

Scheduled to attending are state Sen. Vincent Sheheen, D-Camden, who is running against Gov. Nikki Haley for a second time and state Sen. Brad Hutto, D-Orangeburg, who is challenging Sen. Lindsey Graham.

Also attending is Richland County Councilwoman Joyce Dickerson, who is challenging Sen. Tim Scott in a special election to fill the remaining two years of former Sen. Jim DeMint’s unexpired term.
