SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. (AP) - Sault Ste. Marie police say two officers are recovering from injuries they sustained in falls while chasing two teenage suspects on foot in the dark.

The Evening News (https://bit.ly/1k6vC4r ) says Officer Chris Stempsky sustained a severe skull fracture and was flown to Marquette General Hospital for surgery.

Police say the chase happened about 4 a.m. Thursday and was part of a crackdown on thefts from vehicles and vandalism.

Police say Stempsky slid down an embankment and struck a bounder. They say Officer Nate Kaczmarek hurt his foot in a 7-foot fall.

Sgt. Francis Deshano told The Associated Press on Sunday that Stempsky is recovering at home while, while Kaczmarek is returning to work.

Deshano says police arrested a 15-year-old Sault Ste. Marie boy and a 17-year-old Wisconsin girl.
