DOUGLASVILLE, Ga. (AP) - A juvenile court judge from metro Atlanta has been named president of the National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges.

Judge Peggy H. Walker was sworn in as the national organization’s new top officer last week during the group’s annual conference in Chicago. She’s the presiding judge over the Juvenile Court of Douglas County west of Atlanta.

Based in Reno, Nevada, the national council has a membership of about 2,000 judges and related professionals. It works to make juvenile judges and courts better able to help children and families who come before them. The council was founded in 1937.

Walker had previously served as the council’s secretary and treasurer.
