JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - A Ridgeland man is scheduled to be sentenced Monday after pleading guilty in June to manslaughter and felony leaving the scene of accident charges.

Hinds County District Attorney Robert Shuler Smith says in a news release that 13-year-old Ray Echols was hit by a vehicle on Nov. 17, 2011, while riding his bicycle on a north Jackson street with friends. Echols was pronounced dead at the scene.

Smith says George E. Newell Jr. did not render assistance at the scene or contact authorities. He says the 42-year-old Newell left the scene of the accident.

Newell entered an open plea, meaning the judge would decide his sentence. Circuit Judge Winston Kidd will preside over sentencing.
