LITHGOW, N.Y. (AP) - A 22-year-old man is dead after state police say he lost control of his car and crashed into a tree near Poughkeepsie.

Troopers say Earl Carlin sustained severe head trauma and was pronounced dead at the scene on Route 44 around 3:40 a.m. Sunday.

No one else was in the car and no other vehicles were involved.

Troopers say the 2002 Saab struck a traffic sign, a ditch, and several trees before coming to rest against a large tree near Deep Hollow Road in the Town of Washington.

They say Carlin was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash and the vehicle’s airbags deployed.

Troopers say firefighters pulled Carlin from the wreckage but that they were unable to revive him.

An autopsy is scheduled for Monday.
