SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) - Springfield police are investigating the city’s seventh homicide of the year.

Investigators say a 27-year-old man was shot in the chest outside a store in the city’s Forest park neighborhood at about 9:15 p.m. Saturday. He was pronounced dead at the hospital about an hour later.

Police did not release the victim’s name, but his father identified him as Jermaine Cowell.

Jimmy Cowell says his son was the father of a 5-year-old boy and worked as a massage therapist.

The suspect, described by witnesses as a Hispanic or light-skinned black man with a full beard and armed with a silver handgun. He fled on foot.

Police say the shooting was not random.
