JERSEY CITY, N.J. (AP) - Investigators say a rookie Jersey City police officer slain in an ambush earlier this month died from a gunshot wound to the head.

The Jersey Journal (https://bit.ly/UnLQd1) reports the preliminary findings from autopsies performed on Melvin Santiago and the man who shot him, Lawrence Campbell, were released Monday by Hudson County prosecutors.

The 23-year-old Santiago was killed July 13 when he responded to a reported robbery at a drug store. Campbell was then shot and killed by other officers.

Authorities have said Campbell, a 27-year-old city resident, grabbed a store security guard’s gun and waited for police to arrive before he started shooting.

The autopsy conducted at the state Regional Medical Examiner’s Office in Newark determined Campbell died from “multiple gunshot wounds” to the head and torso. But prosecutors would not provide more specific details, citing the ongoing investigation.
