BROCKTON, Mass. (AP) - A Brockton man is headed to court to face charges in connection with the fatal weekend stabbing of another city man.

Prosecutors say 23-year-old Tyron Coney is scheduled to be arraigned Monday in Brockton District Court on a manslaughter charge.

Authorities say 22-year-old David “D.J.” Smith was stabbed at about 11 p.m. Saturday steps from Perkins Park and a church on North Main Street, and near a homeless shelter. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Smith’s death was the city’s eighth homicide of the year.

Police did not disclose a motive for the stabbing.

Smith’s mother tells The Enterprise (https://bit.ly/1u7ox7I ) that her son was a religious man who grew up in the Nazarene church. He worked as a landscaper and had planned to attend Massasoit Community College.
