OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Authorities in Northern California say a 9-year-old girl is recovering after she was shot by a stray bullet while attending a birthday party at a park.

Oakland police spokesman Officer Frank Bonifacio says the girl was struck in the arm shortly after 5 p.m. Saturday during the party when two groups began shooting at each other near the park in West Oakland.

Police say the girl was taken to a hospital where she was listed in stable condition. Her name has not been released.

No other injuries were reported.

Bonifacio says extra patrols have been assigned in the area as investigators are trying to determine who was involved in the gunfire and a motive for the shooting.
