LIHUE, Hawaii (AP) - The state Department of Land and Natural Resources is hosting a meeting in Hanalei about restoring a stream bank of the Hanalei River.

State officials and representatives from the project’s design consultant and construction contractor are expected to attend Thursday evening’s meeting at Waioli Huiia Church Mission Hall.

The department is proposing to repair about 100 feet of a severely eroded section in the stream bank about five miles upstream of the river mouth.

The river has repeatedly breached at this spot ever since a large flood in 1995.

The restoration work would reduce further erosion and minimize the chances for the existing breach to increase during future floods.
