WEST DANVILLE, Vt. (AP) - Construction is underway on a 16-mile stretch of what will become a 90-mile rail-trail across northern Vermont between St. Johnsbury and Swanton.

Work began last week in West Danville with crews moving toward Mount Vernon Street in St. Johnsbury.

West Danville resident Ted Chase, chairman of the Lamoille Valley Rail Trail Committee, says the contractor is clearing brush, ditching, grading, seeding and mulching.

The Caledonian Record (https://bit.ly/1nNx1rm) reports construction is also underway on a section between Morrisville and Cambridge Junction.

The Barre-based Vermont Association of Snow Travelers has a long term lease on the property from the state of Vermont.

Approved uses for the trail include snowmobiling, dog sledding, horseback riding, biking, and walking.

Construction on the West Danville to St. Johnsbury section must be finished by next year.
