GRAND LEDGE, Mich. (AP) - The Lansing-area community of Grand Ledge is taking steps this summer to repair damage caused by erosion at Island Park in the Grand River.

Second Island was once large enough to house a hotel and a roller coaster, but over the years has seen natural erosion, the Lansing State Journal reported (https://on.lsj.com/1puy9D3 ). Efforts began about 15 years ago to stop or slow erosion and make improvements.

“Since that time, observant residents have noticed that the island is considerably narrower as we have lost sizable amounts of river bank on the island and erosion continues in the areas not previously stabilized,” said Mayor Kalmin Smith.

Last month, the city began drawing down the water level under a permit from the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality. Repairs are scheduled to be made to the south side of the island as soon as the water level gets low enough.

The water level is expected to remain at a low level through most of August. Due to the low level, a riverboat that usually is on the river for the Island Art Fair on Aug. 2 won’t be able to navigate the river. Fair organizers, however, understand the necessity.

“We aren’t going to have the boat, which is a big disappointment, but I guess it just had to be,” said Marilyn Smith, one of the annual event’s organizers.

The city plans to take advantage of the lower river level to do additional studies of the condition of the Grand Ledge dam. The studies are expected to help the city determine whether repairs are possible and, if so, the options and costs for repairs.
