JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - Jackson police have charged a man with capital murder and house burglary in the slaying of a 67-year-old woman who was killed last week after calling 911to report a prowler at her home.

Interim Police Chief Lee Vance says 29-year-old Alonzo Stewart was arrested and charged Monday. It was not immediately clear whether Stewart has an attorney.

Hinds County Coroner Sharon Grisham-Stewart says Helen Harrion died after being beaten, strangled and shot in the face. Harrion called 911 before dawn on July 15, and a relative found her body behind her home 11 hours later.

A news release from City Hall says Stewart was arrested Monday after police officers caught him trying to break into another home in the subdivision where Harrion lived.
