CORTLANDT MANOR, N.Y. (AP) - Two hundred members of New York state’s volunteer defense force are conducting their annual weeklong training program at a Hudson Valley military site.

The New York Guard is training through Saturday at the New York National Guard’s Camp Smith Training Site in Cortlandt Manor in Westchester County.

New York Guard members volunteer their time to train without collecting a salary. Unlike the New York Army or Air National Guard, members of the New York Guard aren’t in the military, don’t carry weapons and don’t conduct missions outside the state.

They assist the New York National Guard during state emergencies and domestic support missions.

There are currently 600 members of the New York Guard statewide. The unit traces its history to World War I, when it guarded important facilities.
