CENTRAL ISLIP, N.Y. (AP) - Authorities say a man with a history of psychiatric issues is being held on $1 million bond after his mother was badly beaten and his brother was fatally injured in their Long Island home.

Charles Okonkwo Jr. of Dix Hills is charged with assault in the critical injury of his mother.

Authorities say he has not been charged in the death of his 15-year-old brother Bradley. Police were awaiting autopsy results on Monday.

They were called to the Dix Hills home on Saturday night. The boys’ father reported that he’d discovered his wife and son.

Newsday (https://nwsdy.li/WqM5pj ) says the mother, Chinwe Okonkwo, is in critical but stable condition at Stony Brook Hospital.

Prosecutors say the suspect has a history of psychiatric issues. The teen’s attorney called the case “complicated.”
