BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - A 35-year-old upstate New York woman has been convicted of killing her 8-year-old daughter more than three years ago.

Erie County Judge Thomas Franczyk found Candace Cartagena (cart-uh-HAYN’-yah) guilty Monday of second-degree murder after a nonjury trial.

Defense attorney Joseph Terranova tells local media he will appeal the verdict after Cartagena is sentenced. That’s scheduled for Aug. 26.

Prosecutors said Cartagena suffocated her daughter Bianca in a jealous rage after the girl had spent Thanksgiving with Cartagena’s estranged husband and his girlfriend. Cartagena’s attorney claimed the girl died of natural causes from an enlarged heart.

Family members found Bianca’s body in November 2010 in her mother’s bed in the Buffalo suburb of Amherst.
