SECAUCUS, N.J. (AP) - The Jersey Journal has tapped a longtime staffer to lead its newsroom.

Publisher Kenneth Whitfield announced Monday that Margaret Schmidt will take over as editor Aug. 1. She currently serves as the newspaper’s managing editor.

A Jersey City native who now lives in Montclair, Schmidt joined the newspaper’s editorial department in 1981 as an intern. She later served as its night city editor, life editor and Gold Coast editor before being named to her current post in 1996.

A graduate of Fordham University who received her graduate degree in Journalism from New York University, Schmidt also serves as an adjunct journalism professor at Felician College in Rutherford.

Schmidt will replace longtime editor Judith Locorriere, who is leaving for a job with NJ Advance Media. She has been with The Jersey Journal for 37 years.
