ST. LOUIS (AP) - A St. Louis man has pleaded guilty to fatally striking his 5-month-old kitten.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports (https://bit.ly/1wTB6Qh ) 23-year-old Andres Wiltz pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of animal abuse on Monday.

Police say Wiltz brought the kitten to a veterinarian in December. They say the kitten was pale, cold and straining to breathe.

The veterinarian determined the kitten had chest and kidney bruising, a large tear in its right lung and a broken pelvis and ribs. The kitten was euthanized.

Police say Wiltz admitted he repeatedly struck the kitten with an open palm to discipline it.

Wiltz’s one-year jail sentence has been suspended for two years. He will be on unsupervised probation during that time.

The judge ordered Wiltz to no longer own pets.
