PETAL, Miss. (AP) - The Petal Police were out in full force, helping to clean elderly residents’ properties.

WDAM-TV reports (https://bit.ly/1wSYyNE ) off-duty officers from the department teamed up Monday with members of the Mt. Bethel Baptist Church in Petal for the project, part of the department’s community service project held each year.

The officers and church members were removing debris and tearing down a dilapidated building.

Rev. Thomas Young, the church’s pastor, says the officers’ work is considered a blessing.

Sgt. Mike Crawford says the activity helps officers reconnect with the community.
