NEW YORK (AP) - City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito says that New York City should offer shelter to some of the unaccompanied children crossing the U.S. border illegally.

Tens of thousands of children have been arriving at the border after fleeing violence in Central America.

They are being detained while they await appearances in immigration court.

Mark-Viverito said Thursday that New York has a responsibility to respond to a humanitarian crisis.

The Puerto Rican-born speaker was a driving force behind New York’s new plan to create municipal identification cards.

The cards will be used by immigrants and others to obtain government services that require a form of identification.
