NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. (AP) - Authorities say two fishermen and a dog were rescued from a burning boat off Orange County.

Sheriff’s Harbor Patrol officials say the men called for help Wednesday afternoon after their 24-foot powerboat caught fire and sent up a huge plume of smoke.

Before a sheriff’s crew could arrive, the occupants of the boat were rescued by a passing vessel about three miles off the coast in Crystal Cove. No injuries were reported.

Lt. Jeff Hallock tells the Orange County Register (https://bit.ly/1mIT2ar ) that harbor patrol officers doused the blaze, but the boat was a total loss. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The newspaper says smoke from the fire was visible across much of the nearby coast.
