PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Olympic figure skater Michelle Kwan has hit the airwaves in the Rhode Island governor’s race on behalf of her husband, Democrat Clay Pell.

The campaign released an ad Thursday featuring Kwan, who has figured prominently on the stump. In the 30-second spot, she says Pell is committed to a women’s equality agenda, citing issues including pay equity, domestic violence and sexual harassment. She says, “Clay believes what I believe: we need equality for all women.”

Pell is a former Obama administrational official who has never held public office. His grandfather is the late U.S. Sen. Claiborne Pell.

In announcing his candidacy in January, Pell stepped to the podium and jokingly introduced himself as “Michelle Kwan’s husband.”

Pell faces Treasurer Gina Raimondo and Providence Mayor Angel Taveras in the September primary.
