GULFPORT, Miss. (AP) - Harrison County Sheriff Melvin Brisolara says he will not seek re-election in 2015 and will retire when his term ends in January 2016.

Brisolara tells The Sun Herald (https://bit.ly/WHidWe ) he is announcing his decision now so Chief Deputy Landi Phillips can begin prepare to run for the office.

The sheriff says he wants to spend more time with his wife and family but will remain active in the community.

Brisolara was first elected in 2007. He unseated longtime Sheriff George Payne in the wake of high-profile criminal and civil cases that resulted from the fatal beating of an inmate and civil rights violations against other inmates at the county jail.

Brisolara was re-elected in 2011.

Brisolara has worked in law enforcement since 1977.
