JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - John R. Kelly has begun a two-year term as chairman of the state Board of Education.

Since 2007, Kelly has served as Gulfport’s chief administrative officer. He was appointed to the board by Gov. Haley Barbour in 2011.

A Utica native, Kelly has worked as regional director for community and family support with Navy Region Southeast in Jacksonville, Florida. He’s worked with the Mississippi Cooperative Extension Service at Mississippi State University and was an adjunct professor at the University of Southern Mississippi’s Gulf Park campus.

Kelly has a bachelor’s degree from Alcorn State University, a master’s degree from Wayne State University in Detroit and a doctorate from USM.

Kelly succeeds Wayne Gann of Corinth as board chairman. Gann will serve on the board until his term ends in July 2015.
