NEWPORT, Vt. (AP) - A Vermont man has been sentenced to 35 years to life in prison for raping a woman while she slept.

The Caledonian Record reports (https://bit.ly/1rFe9Cs) 36-year-old Jason Atherton has maintained his innocence and planned to testify at his trial. But that changed after prosecutors mentioned they had a rebuttal witness. That witness, another jail inmate, testified at Atherton’s sentencing Thursday that Atherton offered to pay him $10,000 to kill a witness.

Before Atherton’s sentencing, the victim spoke in court about how she constantly relives the events of Oct. 30, 2012, and wants the court process to be over so she can try to move on.

Prosecutors said Atherton was convicted in 1999 of raping four other females. He received a two- to 10-year sentence, all suspended except 90 days.
