CHICAGO (AP) - A 40-year prison sentence was handed a Chicago man convicted of sexual assault after a rape kit linked him to a 2002 attack.

Steven Murphy was accused of sexually assaulting a woman who was on her way to buy milk for her children in October 2002. After the attack, the victim reported the incident and gave her clothes to Harvey police. The rape kit was untested for five years. It was discovered with dozens of others during a 2007 raid of the Harvey Police Department by Illinois State Police and the Cook County sheriff’s department.

Officials say investigators were led to the 36-year-old Murphy after he was convicted of a 2007 burglary and his DNA entered into a statewide database.

Murphy was sentenced Thursday by Circuit Judge Michelle Pitman.
