JACKSONVILLE, N.C. (AP) - A Jacksonville man is charged by Onslow County authorities with child abuse after they say he spanked a young girl with several objects.

The Daily News of Jacksonville reports (https://bit.ly/1AgZXlv) 48-year-old Ronald Hariston is charged with child abuse, assault on a child and contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile.

Warrants accuse Hariston of spanking a 9-year-old girl multiple times on her buttocks, back and hands with a wooden paddle and a belt. The warrants say the spanking caused severe abrasions.

According to the sheriff’s office, the charge of contributing the child’s delinquency stems from Hariston leaving the girl after the assault and vulnerable to further abuse and neglect.

Hariston, who was arrested Thursday, is free on $5,000. It’s not known if he has an attorney.
