NORTH SMITHFIELD, R.I. (AP) - A teacher at North Smithfield Middle School is accused of stealing almost $7,000 from the school department.

Police on Thursday charged 29-year-old Brian Chuey of Cranston with larceny.

Police say Chuey stole $6,866 dollars in cash, but did not provide any other details of the theft.

Ben Scungio, a lawyer for the School Department, declined to say whether Chuey is still employed there, but told the Woonsocket Call that any employee accused of wrongdoing is entitled to a hearing before the School Committee.

Chuey, who also coached basketball and golf at the school, was being held Thursday pending an appearance before a justice of the peace.

A phone call seeking comment from him Friday morning went unanswered.
