IRVINE, Calif. (AP) - A transformer fire at an Orange County substation knocked out power for more than 26,000 customers in Irvine.

But Southern California Edison said late Thursday night that only about 8,000 remained affected by the outage several hours later as crews worked quickly to restore power.

Orange County fire Capt. Steve Concialdi (kahn-see-AHL’-dee) says firefighters arrived at the substation at about 5 p.m. to find heavy flames and thick smoke pouring out.

He says mineral oil was burning in one of the transformers and threatening nearby equipment.

Some 20 firefighters had fire out in less than an hour but the outage eventually spread to well over 26,000 customers.
