CANTON, Miss. (AP) - A man accused of stealing merchandise from a holiday shopper in 2013 has been convicted of robbery and witness tampering.

District Attorney Michael Guest says in a news release that Trevioun Lamont Briggs was convicted Thursday by a Madison County jury. Briggs will be sentenced in September.

Guest says Briggs attacked a shopper in a parking lot at the Northpark Mall in Ridgeland on Dec. 14, 2013 and took about $400 in merchandise.

Police officers got copies of the receipts of the items purchased and were notified several hours later when a man came to the mall attempting to return the stolen items for cash.

Guest says while in jail, recorded telephone conversations revealed Briggs asking his girlfriend to provide him an alibi for the time of the robbery.
