SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - A central Utah wildfire temporarily forced evacuations near the small town of Levan.

Authorities say the blaze flared late Thursday afternoon on the south side of the Juab County community.

Eight homes and campsites in a nearby canyon were evacuated.

But the Salt Lake Tribune reported reports (https://bit.ly/1nnQh3i ) that residents were allowed to return home around 9 p.m.

The town is about 100 miles south of Salt Lake City and 15 miles south of Nephi.

Authorities say they don’t know what caused the fire that charred more than a thousand acres. They say firefighters will continue fighting the blaze Friday, but it appears homes are safe.

There were no reports in injury or damage.
