ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. (AP) - For years, Elizabeth City has been a host to U.S. Coast Guard crewmembers and their families, and it’s a little closer to making that hospitality official.

The Daily Advance of Elizabeth City reports (https://bit.ly/1rFJpQ3) U.S. Coast Guard Commandant Paul Zukunft has signed off on Elizabeth City’s application to receive the Coast Guard City USA designation.

Zukunft said he signed off on the application because the “support our Coast Guard men and women receive from the (local) community is recognized and applauded.”

Although there’s a mandatory 90-day waiting period for the designation to become official, Zukunft said he is confident Elizabeth City will be celebrating its new status in the near future.

The Elizabeth City base is home of several Coast Guard centers as well as a small boat station.
