EDGEWOOD, N.M. (AP) - Authorities say a New Mexico man slaughtered his family’s dog to serve it for dinner.

KRQE-TV reported (https://bit.ly/1pZ8vXl ) Friday that Torrance County deputies arrested 46-year-old Salvador Martinez at his Edgewood home.

According to a criminal complaint, deputies conducting a welfare check July 18 were told by Martinez’s girlfriend that he had killed the dog, a 9-month-old chiweenie named Onyx.

Deputies say they found the dog’s carcass in the freezer.

Martinez told deputies he stabbed the dog with a screwdriver and researched dog meat recipes online.

Torrance County Sheriff Heath White says eating dog isn’t illegal. But he says it is “extremely disturbing” the way in which the dog was killed.

Martinez faces a charge of extreme animal cruelty and child abuse.

He is currently in federal custody on unrelated charges.
