OPELIKA, Ala. (AP) - An Alabama man sentenced to life in prison without parole for shooting his mother-in-law to death on a community college campus is planning an appeal.

The Opelika-Auburn News reported Thursday (https://bit.ly/1jOCr4T ) that a notice of appeal was recently filed on behalf of Thomas Franklin May III, who was convicted earlier this year of capital murder and attempted murder for the 2011 shooting at Southern Union State Community College in Opelika.

May’s mother-in-law, Brenda Watson Marshall, was killed and his estranged wife was wounded.

Prosecutors had sought the death penalty, but jurors voted 10-2 in favor of a sentence of life in prison without parole.
