HOUSTON (AP) - Diana Poteat Stallings Hobby, the wife of former Texas Lt. Gov. William P. Hobby Jr., has died. She was 83.

Her husband told The Associated Press that she passed away early Friday due to complications from cancer. She was also suffering from Alzheimer’s disease.

She is survived by four children, their spouses and grandchildren.

She was born in New York City on April 22, 1931. She married Hobby on Sept. 11, 1954. After moving to Houston and becoming the Houston Post’s book editor, she obtained a doctorate in English literature from Rice University. She served on the boards of many Houston cultural institutions and devoted time to the conservancy of the environment.

Services will be held Tuesday at Palmer Memorial Episcopal Church in Houston.
